Laser Hair Removal FAQ’s
Q: Can lasers remove white or blonde hairs?
A: Lasers cannot remove white or blonde hairs.
Q: Can permanent removal happen in one treatment?
A: Permanent removal of hair requires several treatments. One treatment will remove most of the hair, but not permanently. With each treatment, fewer hairs will grow back and the hairs that do will be lighter and thinner.
Q: How long do I have to stop waxing/plucking/shaving before the laser hair removal?
A: You cannot wax or pluck for two weeks before the procedure, but you may shave. The reason is that our target is the hair follicle, which is deep beneath the surface of the skin. Cutting or shaving the hair does not affect the follicle, whereas waxing or plucking pulls out (part of) the hair follicle, and leaves us without a target.
Q: What about sun exposure? Do I need to stay in the shade here in the Hollywood area before laser hair removal treatment?
A: Tan skin is much more likely to have side effects from the laser – so do NOT be tan for your laser hair removal treatment session.
Q: Will laser hair removal help with razor burn, bumps and ingrown hairs?
A: Razor bumps and ingrown hairs are often significantly better after just 2 or 3 treatments (sometimes even after the first treatment).
Laser hair removal is simply the most remarkable and effective technology for permanently removing hair or treating ingrown hairs. But lasers are powerful machines, so have a certified expert perform the treatment.
How does laser hair removal work?
How does laser hair removal work? The simplest explanation is that the laser targets a specific color. The brown or black hair heats up and is vaporized while the surrounding white skin remains untouched. Does this mean that we cannot remove hair from black skin? Actually, we can.
The reason for this is somewhat more complicated, but simply put, the laser selects its target not only based on color, but also on size. So the large hair follicles are heated while the small skin cells remain cool, even if they are brown as well. Any skin color can be treated (with the correct laser), but not every hair color.
Fact #1 – Lasers cannot remove white or blonde hairs.
Fact #2 – Permanent removal of hair requires several treatments. One treatment will remove all of the hair, but not permanently. With each treatment, fewer hairs will grow back and the hairs that do will be lighter and thinner.
Fact #3 – You cannot wax or pluck for two weeks before the procedure, but you may shave.
The reason is that our target is the hair follicle, which is deep beneath the surface of the skin. Cutting or shaving the hair does not affect the follicle, whereas waxing or plucking pulls out (part of) the hair follicle, and leaves us without a target.
Fact #4 – If you avoid the sun, you will get more “bang for your buck”. If the area that is being treated with the laser is tan, we must adjust the settings accordingly. This often entails decreasing the energy, and that decreases effectiveness. So if you want to achieve permanent hair removal in the fewest number of treatments, keep the area that you are treating, out of the sun.
Fact #5 – Razor bumps and ingrown hairs are eliminated after the first or second treatment.
How much does laser hair removal cost?
Some prices (prices are for one treatment session)*:
Upper Lip | $125 |
Face | $250 |
Chin | $150 |
Lip and chin | $175-200 |
Bikini | $250 |
Underarms | $175 |
Underarms/Bikini combo | $350-395 |
*These prices are approximate. You will receive an exact price from the doctor when he evaluates you and decides which ¨laser to use during your free consult.
Do you offer packages?
The problem with packages is that you are locked in. We do not offer packages because every person is different and we do not know exactly how many treatments you will need. The problem with a lot of the “chain” hair removal places is that you can ONLY get a package. You can’t pay for just one treatment to see if you like it. What if you don’t like the technician? What if you don’t do well with their lasers? What if they go out of business? We don’t try to lock you in to a package. We know that if you try our office once, you will stay with us.
What if I am undecided about where to go?
Try a few places. We think that an educated consumer who has been to other places is our best customer. You will see the difference. We have knowledgeable and experienced hair skin doctors. We have the best lasers for each skin type. And we are an established operation. Our practice started in Hollywood in 1975. Try us first, before you get locked into a package at one of the “chain” hair removal centers.
