Erythema Chronicum Migrans

Top  Previous  Next
3-30 days after tick bite

epidemiology:

Lyme disease rare in western U.S. :  the wood fence lizard is what the ticks feed off of there, and the spirochetes die from something in their blood

vaccine:

recombinant outer surface protein
an ex vivo vaccine:  i.e. organisms are killed outside of host;  works in the gut of the tick (antibodies from hosts blood)

diagnosis:

titers take 3-4 weeks to become positive (too long to wait to treat)
therefore must use western blot to diagnose

treatment:

doxycycline
amoxicillin in children (but if question of Ehrlichiosis, then doxycycline is treatment of choice)

“erythema migrans-like”

lone star tick (amblioma americanum)
