Erythema Toxicum Neonatorum

Top  Previous  Next
benign; very common
usually arises in the first two days of life
resolves spontaneously within 10 days
follicular (therefore spares palms and soles) vs. transient neonatal pustular melanosis (which often affects palms and soles)
affects all body surfaces except palms and soles (vs. neonatal scabies)
Tzank --> eosinophils
ddx: neonatal HSV, transient neonatal pustular melanosis, neonatal scabies
see also Vesicles and Pustules in a Newborn ddx

remember: eosinophilic pustular folliculitis may represent a more persistent form of erythema toxicum neonatorum

(which reminds you that ETN is follicular and therefore the one that spares the palms and soles (vs. transient neonatal pustular melanosis or neonatal scabies)
