Follicular Occlusion Triad
1. | hidradenitis suppurativa |
3. | dissecting folliculitis |
• | all three represent chronic, recurrent, deep-seated folliculitis resulting in abscesses and followed by the formation of sinus tracts and scarring |
Similar pathogenesis:
• | common initiating event appears to be follicular hyperkeratosis (leading to retention of follicular products) |
• | primary etiology of theses conditions is not bacterial (unopened abscesses are culture negative, though frequently become secondarily infected) |
Similar histopathologic findings:
• | early: follicular hyperkeratosis with plugging and dilatation of the follicle |
• | at first little inflammation but eventually a perifolliculitis develops |
Chronic Deep Folliculitis
• | folliculitis (acne) keloidalis nuchae |
Histopathologic findings:
• | early: perifollicular infiltrate of neutrophils etc… |
• | develops into perifollicular abscess --> destruction of hair follicle |
