• | 10-15% of cases involve ophthalmic division of trigeminal nerve (V1) |
• | when only the supratrochlear and supraorbital branches are involved, the eye is usually spared |
• | when zoster involves the tip and the side of the nose (i.e. nasociliary branch of V1) careful attention must be given to the condition of the eye |
• | results from involvement of the facial and auditory nerves both the motor and sensory fibers by VZV (herpes zoster) |
• | herpetic inflammation of the geniculate ganglion is felt to be the cause |
• | results in facial nerve palsy and involvement of the external ear or tympanic membrane (tinnitus, vertigo, deafness) |
