Two patterns of hyperpigmentation: (hypermelanosis):

1.brown
increased melanin in basal layer melanocytes and keratinocytes
2.slate-gray to blue
dermal macrophages containing melanin (Tyndall effect)

 

 

IN EVERY CASE CONSIDER:  post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation
