uncommon but distinctive hamartomatous malformations
•
the malformations consist of a collection of subcutaneous lymphatic cisterns with a thick muscle coat that communicate with the clinically apparent superficial vesicles*, via dialed channels lined with lymphatic endothelium
•
* “frog spawn” (filled with clear or blood tinged fluid)
•
may appear in the setting of post-mastectomy lymphedema as a result of lymphatic damage following surgery and radiation AKA secondary lymphangioma (lymphangiectasis)
•
treatment: surgical removal of the subcutaneous cisterns (residual skin vesicles separated from their underlying cysts regress)
