Indirect immunofluorescence using salt-split skin:

induces split at the level of the lamina lucida
autoantibodies in patients serum react to either the roof (epidermal side) or the floor (dermal side) of the split to help with diagnsosis:
BP - roof
EBA - floor (collagen VII)
bullous SLE - floor (collagen VII)
cicatricial pemphigoid - roof, floor, or both: roof (BP2 antigen) = most common;   floor (collagen VII) = least common
