Uses:
1. | Hypo- vs. de- pigmented (if milk white then depigmented, if just lighter than skin, then hypopigmented) |
2. | To rule out erythrasma in intertrigo |
- | corynebacterium, produce porphyrins |
- | porphyrins under Wood’s lamp = coral red fluorescence |
3. | tinea capitis in children (some species of microsporum fluoresce yellow-green on Wood’s lamp) |
4. | urine from a patient with PCT shows orange-red fluorescence |
5. | in melasma: to distinguish epidermal from dermal pigment (epidermal pigment is accentuated by Wood’s lamp) |
