age 2-10 months;  predominantly black newborns and infants
recurrent episodes of intensely pruritic pustules and papulovesicles on hands and feet (usually palms and soles)
eruption lasts 1-2 weeks,  only to recur in 2-4 weeks
with age the remissions last longer and the disease spontaneously resolves at age 2-3 years
ddx:  scabies, acute dyshidrosis (predominantly lateral aspects of hands and fingers), impetigo (larger pustules, positive culture)
