Cadherins:
• | = calcium-dependent cell adhesion molecules |
• | include desmocollins and desmogleins (they associate with the intermediate keratin filament network through plakoglobin and desmoplakin) |
Integrins:
• | they were named to reflect their role in integrating the intracellular cytoskeleton with the extracellular matrix |
• | present on the cell surface at high density but their ligand binding affinity is low |
• | this allows them to bind to and sample large numbers of matrix molecules without becoming irreversibly bound, thereby permitting optimal interaction between the cell and matrix |
Keratins:
divided into two families (the keratins are expressed in pairs containing one member from each subfamily):
1. | acidic family (keratins 9 thru 20) |
• | keratin 9 defect – Vorner variant PPK (local epidermolytic hyperkeratosis) |
2. | basic family (keratins 1 thru 8) |
• | keratin 1,10 (keratins of terminal differentiation) defect – congenital bullous ichthyosiform erythroderma (epidermolytic hyperkeratosis) |
