clinical:

develops in infants with severe underlying diseases
etiology unknown
pathogenesis = increased ratio of saturated to unsaturated fat (therefore higher solid phase temperature; makes sense: lard vs. vegetable oil)

 

histology:

distinctive changes: adipose cells containing needle-shaped clefts in radial array  (crystals)
unlike subcutaneous fat necrosis of the newborn, there is very little inflammation
